IPTV in a Caravan or Motorhome: UK Guide (2026)
A caravan or motorhome trip is a lot better when you can still catch the match or the evening drama. Satellite dishes for caravans work but are bulky, fiddly to align and limited to certain channels. IPTV is the lighter option: if you can get an internet connection, you can watch. The catch is getting a good connection in a field in Wales. Here's how to make it work.
Option 1: Campsite Wi-Fi
Many sites advertise Wi-Fi, and it is worth trying first. Be realistic, though. Campsite Wi-Fi is shared between every pitch, often slow in the evenings, and sometimes capped. It may cope with standard definition in the afternoon and then struggle at 8pm when everyone else is streaming too.
Tip: a Wi-Fi booster or outdoor antenna mounted on the caravan can pick up the site signal much better than a Firestick inside a metal-framed van.
Option 2: A 4G or 5G router (the best all-rounder)
For most caravanners, a mobile broadband router with a data SIM is the most reliable setup. It creates your own private Wi-Fi network inside the caravan, so you are not sharing with the whole site. Look for:
- A router that accepts an external roof-mounted antenna, which makes a big difference in rural areas
- A SIM from whichever network has the best coverage where you travel most, so check coverage maps before you buy
- A large or unlimited data allowance, because streaming uses a lot of it
Option 3: Starlink
Satellite internet such as Starlink's roaming plans works in places with no mobile signal at all, and speeds are usually more than enough for HD or 4K. The trade-offs are the hardware cost, the monthly fee, power draw and needing a clear view of the sky. It makes the most sense for people who tour remote areas often.
How much data does IPTV use?
This is the number that matters on a mobile data plan. As a rough guide:
- SD: around 0.7 GB per hour
- HD/Full HD: around 1.5–3 GB per hour
- 4K: around 7 GB per hour or more
A 90-minute match in Full HD can easily use 3–4 GB. On a capped plan, drop to SD or HD when you're away. Our full guide on IPTV data usage has more detail.
The best device for the caravan
A Firestick is ideal: small, cheap and powered from a USB adapter. Many caravan TVs are 12V models with HDMI ports, so it simply plugs in. If your van has no TV, a tablet or laptop works just as well. One subscription works across devices, so you can watch at home and in the caravan without buying anything extra.
Watching from abroad
Taking the motorhome to France or Spain? Your subscription works anywhere with an internet connection. Check your data SIM's roaming rules before you go, because EU roaming allowances vary between UK networks. Our guide to watching UK TV abroad covers the rest.
Don't forget the TV licence
Watching live TV in a caravan has licence rules of its own, which depend on whether the caravan is a touring or static one. Read do you need a TV licence for IPTV and check the TV Licensing guidance for caravans before your trip.
Test it before you set off
The best time to find out whether your setup works is on the driveway, not on the first night of the holiday. Set up the router and Firestick at home, run our IPTV speed check, and use a 6-hour free trial to test it on the actual connection you'll be using.
