Setting Up IPTV for Elderly Parents (UK 2026)
Many of our customers aren't setting IPTV up for themselves. They're setting it up for a mum, dad or grandparent who wants their favourite channels without a huge monthly bill. The service itself is easy. The trick is making the setup simple enough that a phone call for help is rarely needed. Here's how to do it.
Pick the simplest device
For most older viewers, a Firestick with the Alexa voice remote is the easiest option. The remote has few buttons, and voice control means they can say "open TiviMate" instead of hunting through menus. It plugs into any TV with an HDMI port, so there's no need to buy a new set.
If they already have a recent Samsung or LG Smart TV, an app on the TV itself means one fewer remote, which is also a good choice.
Choose an app that looks like normal TV
TiviMate is the closest thing to a traditional TV guide: a grid of channels and times, with up and down to change channel. That familiar layout matters more than any feature. You can set TiviMate to open straight into the last channel watched, so switching on the TV feels like switching on any other telly.
Build a short favourites list
This is the single most important step. A full list of 15,000 channels is overwhelming. Instead:
- Ask them which channels they actually watch, which is usually 10 to 20
- Add those to a favourites group in the app
- Put the favourites group first, or set it as the default
- Number them in an order that makes sense, such as the main BBC and ITV channels first
Now changing channel is just up and down through a short, familiar list.
Write down three things
Leave a simple note by the TV that covers:
- How to switch on the TV and Firestick, and which input to select
- How to open the app (or the exact phrase to say to Alexa)
- Who to call if something goes wrong
Plan for the common problems
Most "it's not working" calls come down to the same few things:
- Wrong TV input. Someone pressed the source button. Label the right HDMI input.
- The Firestick needs a restart. Teach them to unplug the power for ten seconds and plug it back in.
- Wi-Fi dropped. If the router is nearby, a wired connection or a better spot for the router prevents a lot of trouble. See our buffering guide.
Help from a distance
You don't have to live next door to help. Our support team is on WhatsApp, so either you or your parent can message us with a photo of the screen, and we'll explain the fix in plain English. Many families set the subscription up from their own phone, with the plan in their own name, and simply install it on a parent's TV.
Don't forget the TV licence
If they watch live channels, they need a TV licence. Anyone aged 75 or over who receives Pension Credit can apply for a free one. Read more in do you need a TV licence for IPTV.
Try it on their TV first
Before you buy a plan, set everything up on their TV and use a 6-hour free trial so they can try it with you there. If they're comfortable using it, pick a plan on the pricing page. Longer plans mean fewer renewals to think about.
