IPTV Black Screen? How to Fix It (2026)

You pick a channel, the loading circle disappears, and you're left with a black screen. Sometimes there's sound, sometimes nothing at all. The fix depends on which of those you have, so start by working out which situation you're in.

Which black screen do you have?

  • Black screen with sound: the stream is arriving, but your device can't decode the video. Go to fixes 1 to 3.
  • Black screen with no sound on one channel: that channel may be down or in a format your device can't play. Go to fixes 2 and 6.
  • Black screen on every channel: the problem is the app, the login or the connection. Go to fixes 4 and 5.

1. Switch the video decoder

This fixes most "sound but no picture" cases. IPTV apps can decode video with the device's hardware chip or in software. Some channels only work with one or the other.

  • TiviMate: Settings → Playback, then change the decoder between hardware and software
  • IPTV Smarters: Settings → Player Settings, then switch between hardware and software decoding

Change the setting, go back to the channel and try again.

2. Try the HD version instead of 4K

4K channels often use a newer video format called HEVC (H.265). Older Firesticks, budget Android boxes and older Smart TVs can't decode it, or can't decode it fast enough, and show a black screen. If the Full HD version of the same channel plays, that's the cause. Read more in what is 4K IPTV.

3. Check HDMI and the TV input

Unplug the Firestick or box from the HDMI port and plug it back in firmly. Try a different HDMI port. If you use an HDMI extender, switch or splitter, remove it and connect directly, because 4K content needs a connection that supports copy protection, and cheap adapters often don't.

4. Clear the app's cache

A corrupted cache can stop every channel from displaying. On a Firestick:

  1. Go to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications
  2. Select your IPTV app
  3. Choose Force stop, then Clear cache

Our step-by-step guide to clearing the cache on a Firestick covers this in more detail.

5. Check your connection and login

If nothing loads at all, confirm the internet is working by opening another app. Then check your subscription hasn't expired and that you're not over your connection limit on another device. See IPTV login not working and connection limits explained.

6. Ask for a different stream format

IPTV streams come in two main formats, usually called MPEG-TS and HLS. Some devices handle one better than the other. If a particular device shows black screens on many channels, message us and we can give you a link in the other format to try.

7. Update the app and the device

Install any pending updates for the IPTV app and the device itself. Video decoding bugs are regularly fixed in updates, especially on Smart TVs.

When it's the channel

If one channel is black on every device you try, and other channels work, the source feed is probably down. That's on our side to fix. Tell us the channel name and we'll look into it.

If the picture is there but keeps stopping, that's buffering rather than a black screen. Head to our buffering guide. For anything else, message support with your device and app, and we'll sort it with you.
